Our Guide to fitting your bra

The bras we offer you, generally come with a drop down hook or popper facility, these can then be worn both while pregnant and then for nursing. Making more economical sense.

Here in our shop in Cornwall where we specialise in maternity and nursing bras …we never rely on a tape measure to find the correct fit. In our opinion the results when using this method can be confusing and inaccurate!

There are however some golden rules, which we follow these, should also help you to fit your bra correctly, without the need for a tape measure.

Before you make a start please make sure you are wearing your most recently purchased bra.

CHOOSE YOUR RIB BAND FIRST

Loosen the your bra shoulder straps, which will then enable you to fit the rib band properly, this band should run parallel around your rib cage and should not ride up at the back (Very often when this happens the rib size is too big and the cup too small).

Remember that the weight of the breasts should be supported through the back of the bra.

If you are pregnant you need to be able to fit your new bra on the first hook to allow for rib expansion.

If you are nursing or very near your due date you need to fit your new bra on the last hooks, to allow for the ribs to reduce after your baby is born.

SELECT YOUR CUP SIZE NEXT

Make sure each breast is sitting centrally in the cup. You can now tighten the shoulder straps, so that they are comfortable.

You will need to check that there is no breast tissue escaping from the cup! Check around the arms, on the top and under the cup. Looking in the mirror sideways is a good way to check this.

If you are pregnant you need to allow for growth, you can expect to increase from anything from one to three cup sizes (approx), during your pregnancy. Therefore regularly checking your cup size is essential. You need to make sure there is always room for growth.

If you are 36 weeks pregnant + you should now be looking at buying your bras for when the milk comes in after your baby is born. Your breasts will increase in size again during this time. It is vital to make sure the cup size you choose will be able to accommodate this increase.

It is also worth remembering you may well want to fit a breast pad in too!

Approximately twelve weeks after baby is born the breasts tend to settle and you may find your bras are not as supportive and need to reduce the rib and cup size when purchasing your next bra. It is still essential though to always allow room for fluctuation in breast size whilst breastfeeding.

If you are still uncertain of which size to go for please call and we will be happy to advise you.

How many bras will I need? Most customers find three is a good number, one to wear, one in the wash, and one ready change into. Many women find it more comfortable to have a bra to sleep in, the bravado original nursing bra is ideal.

Which Style will fit me best?  The bras we offer all come up slightly different in their sizing, but don’t worry you will be advised on this when reading the information on the online buying pages.
